Top Tasmanian Wine Regions

Thu 10 Oct 2024

Tasmania’s wine regions are as varied as its wines, each with a climate, soil, and terrain that create unique flavours in the glass.

Here’s a look at the top Tassie wine regions that should be on your radar:

Tamar Valley

Situated in northern Tasmania, the Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s largest wine region, producing around a third of the state’s wine. Known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and premium sparkling wine production, the Tamar Valley is ideal for anyone seeking beautiful scenery with top-notch wine. You’ll find wineries like Tamar Ridge offering tasting tours that showcase the Valley’s signature style.

Coal River Valley

Just outside Hobart, Coal River Valley’s vineyards produce some of the state’s best Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Noir. Cooler than the Tamar Valley, it benefits from long, sunny days that give its wines a crisp acidity and refined structure, making for an unforgettable glass (or three).

East Coast

Known as much for its turquoise waters and pristine beaches as its wineries, Tasmania’s East Coast offers an idyllic setting to enjoy Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Vineyards near Coles Bay, including Devil’s Corner, blend the beauty of coastal Tasmania with wines that perfectly capture the spirit of this sunny region. Our must-visits include Craigie Knowe, Milton Vineyard and Gala Estate.

Derwent Valley

Just north of Hobart, the Derwent Valley brings something different to the table with its cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and aromatic whites. This area’s varied terroir and crisp conditions create wines with elegance and depth.

Huon Valley and North West Tasmania

Though smaller in production, these regions are no less impactful. Both areas are gaining a reputation for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines that reflect the purity and wildness of Tasmania’s southern and western landscapes.
