How Much Wine Does Tasmania Produce Annually?
Sun 13 Oct 2024
What Tasmania lacks in sheer volume, it more than makes up for in quality. Consistently praised and awarded, Tassie wines are proof that small-batch, cool-climate wines are world-class and absolutely worth seeking out.
In 2024, Tasmania produced around 16,805 tonnes of wine grapes—about 1.2 million cases—marking a 36% growth from recent years and underscoring the rising demand for Tasmanian wine (Wine Australia). For a relatively small player, that’s an impressive leap. But what makes Tasmanian wines so valuable?
It’s all in the unique growing conditions. With a cool climate that allows grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, Tassie wines develop bright acidity and nuanced flavours, capturing the essence of this island's rugged terroir. Grapes from Tasmania command an average of AUD 3,674 per tonne—more than five times the national average of AUD 613 (Wine Australia). This premium places Tasmania fifth in grape value across Australia, despite only ranking thirteenth in volume. So while Tasmanian wine might be less common on the shelf, it’s proof that the best things can come in smaller quantities.
